YogaYak looks at yogaliciously funny YouTube

YogaYak was conceived before the advent of YouTube and sites like it. We are very happy that such efforts are permitting more and more people to discover yoga and other practices such as Buddhism.

Much of YogaYak's new traffic comes from people discovering a few of our classes that we share freely via YouTube.

Over the course of a few years we've found very thoughtful YouTube video's that we added to our "Favorites" section. We've also created a playlist called "yogalisciously funny". So before sharing anything "serious" we hope to share a smile...
Yoga - Embryonic Stages of the Journey

It happened as a stroke of fortune to have found this website. As for me, I was on the threshold of learning Yoga and have prepared for actual practice to get out of the books and into daily meditations. My mind would be perfectly content to read about it until I leave the planet, however I knew I must take that "leap" to a commitment to daily practice... this website: Yogayak.com, was the catalyst to do just that! ~ Thank you

Yoga & Sciatica

Sciatica is a painful condition characterized by symptoms ranging from sharp pain through the lower spine, a stabbing sensation in the buttock, to knee or ankle pain, or even numbness or burning in the leg. Sciatic pain is common in individuals with lower back problems, the obese, pregnant women, and the elderly. Yoga can, however, provide relief from this condition which causes temporary but acute pain in nearly every adult at some point in their lives; sciatica can however cause debilitating pain if left untreated.

We certainly think so – and part of that is to create a space that is yours and yours alone. We are very fortunate to have Padma’s teachings as part of our project. During this meditation, she will guide you into a sacred meditation space in your environment and in your Self. Your space should be calm, clean, tranquil and fluid.

Once again, Padma guides you to inner awareness through this energetic breathing practice. Using a combination of Belly Breathing, Ujayii/Ocean Sounding Breath, and Alternate Nostril Breathing /Nadi Shodhana, Padma shows you how to stimulate your nervous system, and clear your sinuses just by breathing.

There is no strain in this practice, just deep breathing, from the belly. Breathing at your own pace, your own ability, you will increase your confidence, calm and create a sense of steadiness with which you can connect at any time. This meditation reacquaints you with the natural rhythm of your breathing, while improving your posture, strengthening your abdominal muscles and releasing any pent up anxiety in your body and mind.
Eight Limbs of Classical Yoga

The practice of yoga as outlined in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali encompasses exercise, meditation and ritual for the whole body and spirit. The eight limbs of Classical Yoga address our relationships with others, with ourselves and with the Divine. The eight stages of the limbs of Classical Yoga are known as Ashtanga Yoga (ashta = eight and anga = limb) beginning with ethical conduct and progressing through asanas, breathing exercises; and finally meditation practices that lead to spiritual ecstasy and consciousness through self-realization and union with the divine.

Squatty Training

For most of history humans have squatted to have a bowel movement. In fact, if you watch children still in diapers you will see them squat naturally when they have a bowel movement. Most unfortunately this good, natural behaviour is unlearned with the beginning of potty training around the age of two.

What's Wrong With Sitting?

While the majority of the world (two thirds of the population) still squats to defecate, the western world with its sitting posture has some of the highest rates of bowel and colon related diseases including:

Hatha Yoga Illustrated

This is an absolute necessity for anyone approaching a yoga practice, for yoga instructors seeking a teaching aid or any yoga writer. The postures are clearly illustrated, benefits clearly described and its light approach to yoga spirituality makes it accessible for anyone interested in the practice and philosophy of yoga.

In the course of my research for this site, I still find this book an essential source of information. Everything you need to learn a basic, yet comprehensive yoga practice is contained within the pages of this book!

In yoga,

Inner Gazing Meditation

Sometimes it is helpful to use a sacred object, or external focal point in meditation, to give the restless monkey mind something to do while the rest of you creates stillness.

In this more advanced meditation practice, the object is held in your minds’ eye - for instance, you can hold the image of a candle flame or a yin/yang symbol internally as you observe your breath and your thoughts, mindful of what arises. The discipline of this internal focus brings your meditation to deeper places in your mind, creating deeper calm, inner peace and spiritual connection. Duration: 7 min
